My Rational Response to Ratemyprofessor.com!

Here is where I will take ratings from rate my professor and address them. I will update this page as new ratings come out but please keep in mind I do not spend much time looking at them. I find that I want students to tell me directly if there is something wrong or if there is something they want changed so often times students do not leave ratings because we have already spoken about it. I always appreciate good comments and I take criticism into account going into a new semester. I just wanted a place to voice my response to all of these ratings. Students have told me they would be “freaked out” if I responded directly on rate my professor because they see the site as a sort of silent tool they use to gauge which classes to take and with who. So if I respond there it means I am reading what they wrote and it feels invasive to them. I totally get it. But let me let you in a secret, I use it too because I have had some horrible teachers and do not want to get stuck with one. Enjoy!

UPDATE: Jun 20th, 2022

Don’t take him for Public Speaking. He will not teach you anything about speaking. He will tell you what genre your speech is, that’s it. He will spend most classes arguing about politics with all the students. If you want a debate class, he’s for you but if you want to actually learn or just need to take this for credit, take it with someone else.

I do not know how this one got past me but I noticed now as I was looking to see how a colleague (who feels her Rate My Professor rating must be awful. SPOILER: they were not!) rated. I do not teach Public Speaking anymore more so this is really redundant. CCRI created a new department of Mass Media and Communications so no English professors are allowed to teach it. I would be upset as I have been teaching it for 13 years but a colleague had been teaching it for over 30 so I do not feel so bad.

Anyway, this is not a debate class. I allow and accept multiple points of view in my class and sometimes it goes back and forth. One of the things you have to learn is NOT to start from the position that you are absolutely right. This makes argument more of a fight than an argument. Yes, those two terms are not always synonymous. Perhaps this student started from the position of being right and allowing others to have differing opinions is pointless. I would argue that this makes my point even more important.

UPDATE 01/20/2024 I AM NOT A TRANSPHOBE!

I recently had an issue where a student called me a transphobe as well as a transphobe apologist. I wrote to RatemyProfessor because I wanted a chance to respond to the criticism but was told they would not take down the review. I replied that I did not want them to take anything down but I wanted to be able to address the matter. They granted me permission after verifying that I was the professor in question, but to my surprise, the offending review was removed. I do not know what happened. I was in a class teaching when a student brought this new review to my attention.

The reason this happens is because I have a policy in my class that any topic is fair game so long as it is brought in good faith and with respect. I go where other teachers will not and sometimes people do not like the conversation. In this particular case the class was upset because one person said that he could not wrap his head around the transgender issue. That was it. That was what started this class wide argument that led to me being called a transphobe. I defended him and pointed out that you can make more allies by explaining issues rather than attacking them.

6/18/20 UPDATE!!

This man has no business teaching. His methods would never fly at a university. I am honestly ashamed that he is a teacher at my college.

My lowest score yet!! I think I know who this person was and rather than respond to him directly I will point out that my methods were developed while teaching at a University. It was a summer class and students will come home from their schools and try to get some extra credits in by attending a Community College class or two. The problem with this is that these students tend to think they can walk through the class as if it is beneath them. This student received a grade of DROP/WITHDREW so I can only imagine he didn’t like the work. If you didn’t like my class at CCRI you will be shocked when you get to URI and find it is essentially the same course.

Chuck is an awesome professor!!!! Super friendly, talks about current events, talks a lot, super funny and sets up a great environment to learn in. Goes off topic a bit, but he always makes sure youre learning something. I had him for ALP Composition 1 & College Writing, I loved all the assignments we worked on. Super chill dude

Thank you! Sorry I talked too much but I need to make sure every student understands the assignments. I try to read the room and if people still look confused I will keep going. I do get off topic but that is because I love my students and want them to see that education is not just book work and tests. We have personalities. I am really glad you liked the assignments. I work hard coming up with interesting ones that help facilitate learning.

He is very well-spoken and really cares about his students. Informative when teaching as well although he is very slow when grading and passing back papers. Still havent gotten one back yet and semester is over in two weeks.

I do really care about my students! I was very slow getting papers back to students this semester but my daughter had been in the hospital and getting papers back to students was not high on my priority list. I apologize and wish I could have done it differently. I made sure everyone got their papers back before the end of the semester and allowed revisions during exam week. If this helps you understand I also had to drop a course I was taking at URI during this semester because my daughter was my sole focus that semester.

Second time taking this professor, speech is not my strong suit. He sets the atmosphere so that when you get up there to speak, nothing else in the world matters, you have the floor. Extremely respectable, genuine guy. Would take him again and again. When you get to the persuasive speech however; don’t say why prostitution should be legalized..

Okay, this made me laugh out loud! I know who this student is and I have written a recommendation for him to go to a four year college. Great guy with a great personality. He did his speech on why prostitution should be legal (I was ready for the persuasive argument) but the reasons were shockingly offensive. For example, if we legalized prostitution more women would go into that profession and there would be a better selection of hot women. Nothing of safety, or tax revenue, or public trust so I was taken completely by surprise! If you read this, know I love you buddy!

Prof. Morgan is such a great teacher. He really analyzed the material we read and really helped to understand everything. He’s extremely understanding but he can smell BS so don’t try to pull a fast one.

I am glad I could help you understand the material and help as best as can. Your words are inspiring and the reason I keep teaching. I do have a very sensitive BS detector and it has never failed me. If students have learned from me they have also honed their ability to detect BS.

Easy going and a great professor. Can be absent minded when it comes to papers. Doesn’t give feedback on papers unless asked. Easy A.

I kind of take issue when students say “Easy A”. If the teacher is being honest they should be showing you what work you need to do in order to receive an “A” grade. Then if you do the work satisfactorily you get the desired grade. To say, “Easy A” implies that there was little to no work and the result was an “A” by accident. In my classes I do my best to help students understand that they have the responsibility to pass the class. I will outline how to do it but you need to do the work. If it were easy I would be handing out all “A”s but that is not something that happens.

As for being absent minded, I make sure to tell students on the first day of classes that I am the most forgetful person ever and that is a fault of mine I work on. If I do not write it down I will forget it. I really am easy going and great too.

Best professor ever. Call him Chuck. Laid back will help anyone loves to joke around. Only 4 essays to do, just show up to workshop do the work and your guaranteed a B no matter what its your choice to raise that B unless he already gave you an A. Best comp 1 professor and college writing professor had him two semesters

At this time I was working with a contract syllabus that was designed by Peter Elbow. The idea was simple, do the work asked of you and you are guaranteed a “B” grade. If you want an “A” you have to work for it. This syllabus was wildly successful and students really appreciated the ability to make mistakes without dire consequences. In my class I bounce between 4 or 5 essays a semester. I tend to do 4 because I do not want the semester to feel rushed or try to cram too much into the course. I much prefer quality over quantity. Workshop is vital to the course. I find I am very forgiving on due dates so long as students attend the required workshops.

If you can breathe you will get an A in his class. He isn’t a good professor, rather he just sits on the desk and talks about Resident Evil. It’s an easy A.

Here it is. This is the one rating on all of rate my professor that I have had the most issue with. First, I do not understand because he gave me a 5.0 Excellent rating then goes on to say I am not a good professor!?? We have the “Easy A” issue again when I make it very clear what students need to do to get an “A” grade. I remember this semester in question because one of the new Resident Evil games was coming out so the class was asking if I was enjoying it and we would talk about it. It was not me guiding the conversation that way but more like weekly updates on my progress in the game and if I was enjoying it. This would make up about 5 – 10 minutes at the beginning of class. I would never spend entire class time discussing games at all. I do sit on the desk. I find it is a more casual thing I can do to help students get comfortable talking to me. I shouldn’t do it but I love teaching and when conversation are going well I get into them with students.

This was a 2100 class which is the class I go through the most changes with how to teach. This was the last semester I used the course book and had them read two to three chapters a week. I do not do this any more as this was redundant and a waste of time. I believe I change things up ever year with this class. I am constantly trying to refine and better the material for students. I do take criticisms for this class and I apologize. I do not ever want to get stuck in a rut of doing the same thing over and over as this would bore us both to tears. Apparently, this person was not a fan of how that particular semester went. They can’t all be zingers!
